Mia, 5 years old: How big are whales?
When do the whales visit Hawaii?

Thank you

Hi Mia!

Whales are huge! Some, like the blue whale, can grow to be over 100 feet
long and weigh over 100 tons. The smallest baleen whale is the pygmy right
whale, which only grows to about 20 feet in length (I don't know how much
they weigh). These are all baleen whales - which are whales that have baleen
instead of teeth in their mouths. The largest toothed whale is the sperm
whale, which can be about 60 feet and weigh about 50 or 60 tons. The
smallest toothed whale, the harbor porpoise, is only 3 or 4 feet long and
weighs only 100 pounds.

Humpback whales visit Hawaii during the winter months - December through
March. They leave the islands during April and begin their long migration
back up to Alaska. Many other whales species, including dolphins, too, visit
the islands all year round.

Thank you for your question!
