There is only one species of killer whale, called Orcinus orca. However, in
studies in the Northwest USA and western Canada, researchers have found
resident type orcas and transient type orcas. Residents live in large pods
of 7 to 20 individuals, eat fish, vocalize a lot and have some subtle
physical differences. Transients live typically in pods of 1 to 6 animals,
eat marine mammals, vocalize less and are quiet when hunting.
