Good question Michael!  And, I am not certain that anyone knows the
definitive answer to this question yet.  Some of the competing hypotheses
are that the loud noise made when the whale falls back into the water is a
means of it's communicating to other whales.  Others suggest that it is
just a means of play for the whale.  Still others think that landing on
the water surface with a hard splash could rid the whales of ectoparasites.
