Dear Blair,

Yes, there are a number of ways that you can help whales! Protection of
whales in their ocean habitats requires a number of things to be
successful. The two mst important are:

-- money for research (There are a number of 'adopt-a-whale' programs
which funnel money into ongoing research efforts. As well, Earthwatch
has a program where people pay to help conduct ongoing projects.)

-- public support for programs (Voters show their support when they vote
for candidates who support conservation efforts and when they -- or
their children -- write letters to politicians encouraging support for
conservation efforts. As well, refusing to buy products produced by
companies which somehow harm whales helps to send the message back to
the companies that they need to take care of whales if they want us to
but their product!)

As well, you can get involved management or education organizations (try
looking at the back of =91Strategies for pursuing a career in marine
mammal science=92 -- phone 1-800627-0629 for a free copy).

good luck,
