Dear Giles,

Whales do ont get the bends because they do not breathe compressed air.
Nitgren, which dissolves into the tissues causing the bends, is present in
whales, but in a small percent when compared to humans. When whales dive
their bodies are do not compress (although their lungs do), therefore
nitrogen is not forced through the permeable air passages. THere is a lot
more information that goes with this, for example, whales carry a lot more
oxygen in their muscles then we do which makes it possible for them to hold
their breath for long periods of time.

I hope this answers your question. Thank you. Kim Marshall
