Why do narwhals stick their heads vertically out of the water?

Aloha Nathan,

It has ben suggested that the narwhals may use their "tusk" (actually a
long tooth) to poke airholes in the ice overhead. Could this be what you
are refering to? They may also be observing landmarks.
