Subject: codes used on data sheets

The codes that are used for the whales on the data sheets represent the
Genus and species name for the whales.  For instance, Mn=Megaptera
novaeangliae, the humpback whale.  There are seventy plus cetacean
species, so I won't list all seventy, but some of the more common species
we find in the inshore areas of the Gulf of Maine include:

Mn (as above)
Bp=Balaenoptera physalus, the fin whale
Ba=Balaenoptera acuturostrata, the minke whale
La=Lagenorhynchus acutus, the Atlantic white-sided dolphin
Eg=Eubalaena glacialis, the Northern right whale
Gm=Globicephala melaena, the pilot whale
