Larry -
Since I sent that message, I found out about what might me an even better
field guide (I spent an hour talking to the author last night when she
dropped in out of the blue - she's working on a similar guide for the
Atlantic which should be out around June). Probably cheaper, too ($19.95).
It's "Guide to Marine Mammals of Alaska" by Kate Wynne, published by Alaska
Sea Grant College Program, University of Alaska, Fairbanks (ISBN
1-56612-044-6). It's spiral bound and printed on very heavy waterproof
paper, and has become the standard for NMFS fishery observers and
eco-tourism trip leaders in Alaska. Since most of the species in the
Pacific Northwest overlap with Alaska, it should be fine for there, too.
Cheers,
Dr. Bob
