Whales are definitely mammals. What classifies them as mammals, however,  
has nothing to do with being able to survive in a terrestrial environment-
just as surviving on land has nothing to do with humans being mammals.
Whales are mammals because they give birth to live young, breathe air,
have hair on their bodies and are endotherms, etc. FYI - one major reason
whales could not survive on land is because the weight of their bodies
would crush their internal organs.
