Shannon,
Whales were hunted for many products: oil for lamps, lubricants,
margarines and other foodstuffs; food; baleen for fabric and stiffeners,
harpoon lines, nets, baskets,. Teeth and bones were valued for adornments.
The IWC and other organisations have reduced whaling significantly. Some
countries still take whales, Japan and Norway for instance, and there are
aboriginal subsistance hunts.
