Whales have a larynx, but no cords. Rather, they may force across the larynx, 
and through a series of nasal sacks, creating high and low pitched sounds.  
Somewhat like letting air out of a baloon with the end pinched off.
The question is how they produce such powerful sounds, that can carry over 
long distances.
