[WILD_SEAS] Your email can protect coral reefs!

The following alert and request to assist reached us from CORAL REEF
ALLIANCE.
Please support the call today (deadline is 08.01.2001) - whoever can!

Important is also to note that the traditional rights of the Indigenous
Peoples of the Kingdom of Hawaii shall not be touched. To support their
cause and to support any effort in mitigating the negative impact of the
hands of the colonisers is important. The alert therefore is not just an
internal US affair but of international interest.

This following message is a CORAL Action Alert.
______________________________________________________________________

Dear Friend of Coral Reefs,

We recently wrote you to tell you the good news that President Clinton
had
issued an Executive Order creating the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands
Coral Reef Ecosystem Reserve.

Now we need your help to make sure that this protection is permanent.

Please take a moment NOW to send a brief email (sample letter below)
to <hawaiicomments@noaa.gov> to let the Government know that you
support permanent protection for the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Coral
Reef Ecosystem Reserve.

My letter is below, and please feel to copy any of the text, but it
would
have even more impact if you used your own words, telling them why
protecting the Reserve is important to you. Even just a few lines will
be a
big help.

THE DEADLINE FOR COMMENTS IS IN THREE DAYS (Monday, January 8). Please
write
immediately if you can.

A permanent Reserve would create one of the best protected coral
reefs in the United States, preventing drilling, dredging, anchoring on
coral and other destructive practices while still allowing diving,
snorkeling
and boating, existing recreational fishing, and traditional use by
Native Hawaiians. Your support is critical to make sure that a few
industries bent on extractive use of the reefs and fisheries don't
strip this needed protection from the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands.

Thank you for your support of coral reefs.

RE: Comments in support of permanent protection for the Northwestern
Hawaiian Islands Coral Reef Ecosystem Reserve.

Dear Roger,

On behalf of the over 10,000 members of The Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL),
I
would like to voice our strong support for permanent protection for the
Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Coral Reef Ecosystem Reserve.

Most of CORAL's members are scuba divers and snorkelers. They represent
a
cross-section of the over 8.5 million certified divers in the United
States
and an estimated 35 million snorkelers. This is a broad constituency
that
feels strongly about protecting coral reefs. While many of us will
never
have a chance to visit the remote areas of Hawaii protected by the
Reserve,
the benefits of the Reserve, including healthier reefs and fish
populations
in surrounding areas, are a benefit to all Americans. In addition, just
as
most Americans will never hike in the Grand Canyon or Denali National
Park
and
Preserve, we are proud to know that they are there and that our
Government
has had the foresight and strength to protect these precious natural
areas,
including our coral reefs.

Recent scientific studies from around the world indicate that we are
losing
coral reefs and related ecosystems at an alarming rate. As President
Clinton noted, over a quarter of the worlds reefs are already lost, and
we
may lose twice that much in the next few decades if we do not act now.

The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands Coral Reef Ecosystem Reserve is an
example
of
sensible protection that takes into account traditional and existing
uses of
the reefs and related areas while insuring that destructive practices
such
as drilling, anchoring on coral and excessive fishing are prevented.

There are elements of the Reserve plan that should be strengthened. In
particular the dumping of sewage wastewater from cruise ships should be
banned, penalties for violation of the Reserve regulations should be
clear
and strong, and sufficient resources must be devoted to educating the
public
about the Reserve and enforcing the Reserve's regulations.

We urge the President to take all necessary measures to ensure that
permanent, effective protection is put into place so that the
Northwestern
Hawaiian Islands Coral Reefs and related ecosystems will be there to be
appreciated by future generations of Americans.
