1. Global Protest Against Japanese Whaling Intensifies,
New York City Council Passes Anti-Whaling Resolution
NEW YORK, Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- The New York City Council has passed a strongly worded resolution in opposition of Japan's so-called ``scientific'' whaling activities, the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW -- www.ifaw.org) announced today. This follows a similar resolution passed by Congress in October 2000, fueling mounting global opposition to Japanese whaling.
The resolution, number 1690, was presented by City Council Speaker Peter
F. Vallone, and passed via Immediate
Consideration on January 24. In it, the council highlights Japan's
desire to secure a seat on the UN Security Council, and calls for the US
Government to insist Japanese whaling is ended before supporting this action.
The resolution states that, ``The Council of the City of New York denounces the practice of Scientific Whaling, urges the Government of Japan to cease the practice and calls upon the Government of the United States to condition any support for a permanent Japanese seat on the United Nations Security Council to a cessation of whaling activities.''
``Commercial whaling is unacceptable in our day and age,'' said Council Speaker Vallone. ``There is no excuse for the level of whale deaths that the Japanese government has sanctioned through its so-called 'scientific whaling' program. The New York City Council hopes the strong message we are sending with this resolution is heard loud and clear in Tokyo and in Washington, DC.''
Recent polls carried out in Japan by MORI, Britain's leading opinion research company, in partnership with the well-known Nippon Research Center in Japan, indicate that one-third of Japanese respondents feel strongly that Japanese whaling should be abandoned if it causes any harm to the country's international reputation and economy.
``Japan's credibility as an honorable participant in international agreements is being put at stake through the interests of a few individuals who insist on continuing with highly criticized commercial whaling operations,'' said Karen Steuer, IFAW Director of Commercial Exploitation and Trade in Wild Animals. ``Global criticism is growing. The Japanese government needs to pull the plug on this now, before it does permanent damage to its international reputation.''

2. Japan set for 574 tons of whale meat
An entity representing Japanese whale hunters has said it will
sell 574 tons of whale meat derived from whales caught by
hunters since July.
The creatures were captured under Japan's so-called research
whaling program.
The Institute of Cetacean Research said that some 181 tons of
meat will be sold directly to consumers, while the remainder will
be sold to food-processing companies that will convert them into
whale meat products.
The 574-ton meat haul was taken from a catch of 40 minke
whales, 43 Bryde's whales and five sperm whales, the institute
said.
Minke whale meat will sell for 2,980 yen per kg for consumption
as sashimi, while Bryde's whale meat will sell for 3,760 yen per
kg, it said.

3. STOP the killing! Norway wants to revive the whale meat trade
GREENPEACE AUSTRALIA WROTE:
Last week Norway announced it WILL begin exporting whale meat and blubber
despite an international ban. This trade will inevitably lead to more
whales being killed and a resumption of full-scale commercial whaling.
Norway is seriously undermining the Convention on the International
Trade
in Endangered Species (CITES) and international law. If every nation
took
the same approach to CITES as Norway has, there would be no international
bans on any trade in endangered species whatsoever.
Since Norway's announcement media reports claim that the Norwegian
embassies have received very few reactions from the public, environment
groups and authorities about the export decision. Furthermore, the
Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs is reported to have been surprised
at the lack of interest.
The fact is that a majority of people worldwide oppose commercial whaling
and the trade in whale meat. We must URGENTLY tell the Norwegian
Government its decision is unacceptable.
What you can do:
a. Visit the Greenpeace Australia website http://www.greenpeace.org.au
and send a letter of
protest to the Norwegian Prime Minister
b. Contact the Norwegian Embassy in your country and register your
complaint.
