Reward request in slaying of whale

KEY WEST, Fla., March 17 (UPI) -- An appeal is out on the Internet
(Monday) asking environmentalists to donate more money for a reward in
the shooting of a whale off the Florida Keys.
Volunteers tried to save the Minke whale, which beached itself near
Key West last week, managing to refloat the mammal before finding it
dead several hours later.
A necropsy revealed the whale had been shot at least five times.
Friday, the Humane Society of the U.S. offered a $3,000 reward for
the arrest and conviction of those responsible. That has been
supplemented by a $7,000 pledge from the Sea Shepherd Conservation
Society, but more pledges are being sought.
The Marine Fisheries Service has a toll-free hotline to report
information on the killing, or any other infractions: (800) 853-1964.
