Regarding breeding in fin whales of advanced age, Nishiwaki et al.
(1958) reported a pregnant female with 68 ear plug laminations, an
ovulating female with 80 laminations, and a lactating female with 100
laminations. Apparently ca. 1 lamination is laid down per year, at
least after sexual maturity is attained (Ohsumi 1964).
