Subject: Blainsville beaked stranding in SoCal

Mike: Just a quick note to let you know we had an unusual
stranding yesterday (Feb. 18th) in Newport Beach. A 14' Blainsville
beaked whale washed ashore dead about noon. John Heyning of the Natural
History Museum of L.A. County says it appears the whale had been dead
only about one day before washing up. No one seems to have definitive
records. But it appears that this is only the fourth time in recorded
history that such a beaching has occurred on the West Coast...Gary
