1998 has been declared 'The International Year of the Ocean (IYO)'
by the United Nations. In celebration of IYO, nations around the world
are adopting 'The Ocean Charter', a commitment to the future
of the oceans and to the marine and coastal environments.

Through government initiatives and community involvement
throughout 1998, IYO will expand awareness about our oceans

Events to celebrate the 'International Year of the Ocean'
in Canada are designed to engage the imagination of the
Canadian public, especially children and youth.
Confirmed events and activities include:
* Establishment of the IYO Website;
* The sponsorship and dissemination of 'My Ocean Charter';
* Fundraising for the 'Youth for the Oceans Foundation';
* The Team Canada Trade Mission on the Canadian Coast Guard Ship
'Louis S. St-Laurent' will make several ports of call
in Europe before arriving at Expo '98 in Lisbon, Portugal,
for July 1st celebrations at the Canada Pavilion;
* Joint activities such as Oceans Day celebrations on June 8th
across Canada; the development of an 'Oceans 11' curriculum model
with the Province of Nova Scotia; the Blue Schools/Blue Communities
Program with the Canadian Wildlife Federation; the Governor General's
'Oceans and Canadians' multi-media contest for elementary and
secondary schools across the country; and 'My Ocean Charter' program
with the Canadian Association of Principals.
