Subject: Toothaker Minke

Late yesterday afternoon we had a report of an entangled 17-foot minke whale in
the Toothaker Ridge/Cashes Ledge area. It was reported as having line through
the mouth and around the tail in a manner that severely restrained the animal.
We are uncertain at this point whether the animal was anchored or just unable to
swim (or dive) and drifting.

The report yesterday came too late to conduct a disentanglement response. The
possibility that the animal is not stationary, the offshore location, and the
weather this week may make disentanglement unlikely.

The USCG diverted a cutter that was on its way back into Rockland last night to
search for the whale and obtain documentation, but I have not heard whether they
found it.

CCS also received a report of a dead entangled seal on the Cape yesterday.
