Subject: MDA Finback

The Center for Coastal Studies received a report of an entangled finback whale
from the USCG yesterday. The whale was reported by a fishing vessel
approximately 64 miles SSE Montauk Point, Long Island, NY. The fishing vessel
had apparently seen the whale in the same spot the previous day but was unable
to contact the USCG via radio. He reported the whale as alive, wrapped up in
lobster gear, and unable to swim. He also reported sharks in the area.

We have tried unsuccessfully at this point to contact the fishing vessel for
further information. The USCG is sending out a Falcon to investigate whether
the whale is still there...Boston Command Center just reported that the Falcon
saw multiple whales in the area but no entangled ones. They also spoke with
fishing vessels in the area, none of which reported seeing any whales in
distress.
