The New England Aquarium has informed me that the whale stranding up in northern
Newfoundland reported last week as a right whale turned out to be a bowhead
whale. Amy Knowlton and Cathy Quinn flew up from NEA and worked with a
veterinarian from Prince Edward Island.

Several interesting observations were made, including extensive shark bite
damage to the belly blubber and the presence of patchy hemorrhaging and
gelatinous edema. However, the cause of death has not been determined at this
time.
