Subject: gray whales

Hi!
I've been reading about mass deaths of gray whales in baja. I live near
Santa Cruz CA and we've had 2 gray whale corpses wash up near us as well.
(news story at http://www.cnn.com/NATURE/9905/20/gray.whales.enn/index.html
<http://www.cnn.com/NATURE/9905/20/gray.whales.enn/index.html> )
I've heard lots of ideas for why this may be happening but the idea of food
shortages seems absurd. While it's true they may have not had a grand feast
departing from the Bering Sea, there's TONS of food along our shores. In
fact the upwellings have created unheard of supplies of plankton, krill,
etc. So if the whales were hungry, couldn't they have eaten here? Or may it
have been too late? What do you think?

curious,
Jennifer Balboni
