Eleven stranded whales die on Scottish island
LONDON, Dec 8 (Reuter) - Eleven sperm whales which became
stranded on a beach in the islands of Orkney off the north coast
of Scotland died on Thursday.
``The whales are all dead,'' said Mike Lynch, an inspector
for the Scottish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals, who was at the scene.
``It was inevitable, but it happened more quickly than
anyone predicted. It was better that way,'' he said.
Lynch said the stranding had several possible causes.
The whales may have been chasing food too close inshore or
escorting a sick animal into shallow water, or may have had
problems with their innate sonar navigation systems.
