Flight Summary for May 17, 2000 - NEFSC/PSB
The NEFSC/PSB aerial survey for 5/17/00 worked in conjunction with the Center for
Coastal Studies (CCS/MA-Skymaster) to cover the Northern Edge of Georges Bank.
The NEFSC survey began at Plymouth, Ma. to way point 2 on the harbor porpoise survey area of
Stellwagon Bank and Wilkinson Basin (Harbor porpoise protocol: flying at 600', eyes looking
down) from 4216N/7039W to 4216N/6930W including the waters of Stellwagen Bank and Wilkinson
Basin. No marine mammals were sighted on Stellwagen Bank. Two basking sharks, one humpback
and over 300 White-sided dolphins were sighted near 4216N and 6955W (East of Stellwagen
At 4216N/6930W we returned to Right whale protocols (flying at 750', eyes looking out 2
miles), and headed east towards the Northern Edge and Georges Basin region, north-northeast
of Georges Bank.
A couple of right whales at 4216N/6738W, and a scattering of finbacks and sei whales
east to 4216N/6645W. One Sperm whale, 30 Sei whales, 6 right whales and a couple of
humpbacks were observed at 4212N/6635 in the Northeast Channel.
At 4222N/6758W (North of Georges Shoal) we observed a couple of right whales. A
scattering of finbacks, sei whales and dolphins were observed from 4220N/6812W westward to
One humpback was observed at 4208N/7020W (southern portion of Stellwagen Bank). No
harbor porpoises were observed during todays survey.
Total for the NEFSC/PSB and CCS/MA planes surveying the Northern Edge of Georges Bank
(Georges Basin) and east of the Exclusive Economic Zone marine boundary – 17 right whales.
