Subject: NMFS/PSB Aerial Survey July 6, 2000
Flight Summary for 6 July 2000 ~ NEFSC/PSB
The aerial survey for 6 July, 2000 investigated Wildcat Knoll
(4225'N/7000'W), Mayo Swell (4224'N/6910"W), the Cashes Ledge and
Fippennies Ledge area (from 4230'N/6935'W to 4230'N/6840'W by
4255'N/6936'W by 4255'N/6840W to 4245'N/6920'W), Plattes Bank, Jeffreys
Ledge area (south of 4315'N/7000'W), and Stellwagon Bank.
At the Stellwagon Bank area (4218N/7013W), 15 humpback whales were
sighted. Along Jeffreys Ledge, 5 minke whales, 3 finback whales, 4
humpback whales and 2 basking sharks were observed. At Mayo Swell, 12
pilot whales and 2 finbacks were sighted. One finback, 1 minke, 1
humpback and 3 sei whales were observed at Fippennies Ledge
(4256N/6910W). In Cashes, 1 finback, 4 pilot whales, 3 basking sharks
and 1 right whale were observed. The right whale was traveling in a
west/northwest direction at 4247N/6909W.
It was a relatively slow day compared to June 28th in the same area!
The total right whale count for the day was 1. The Beaufort sea state
ranged between 1 and 3.
It has been a great season!
