Subject: Update (7/12/00-pm) on Right Whale Entanglement
Delaware II and NEAq vessel Neried, sighted the entangled whale this
afternoon in the vicinity of 44 37.5'N 66 30.5'W. Unfortunately they were
unable to get a tag on the whale but were able to take photographs of the
whale and get aa better look at the gear.
There appears to be a couple of body wraps that criss-cross over the whale.
One line is red and the other green. The lines can be seen forward and
below the yellow buoys on the left hand side of the whale. The whale is a
relatively small animal and thus the need to remove the gear is becoming
NMFS and CCS will fly an aerial survey tomorrow to assist the Delaware II
and the Neried in locating the animal. Once the whale has been tagged, CCS
will launch a disentanglement effort.
All whale watchers are requested to keep a look out for the entangled whale
and contact the Whale Emergency Network via pager (902) 558 3376 or Fundy
Traffic Channel 14, the Neried will be standing by on Channel 16.
Thank you for your assistance.
