The sperm whale came ashore on a clam flat in the Essex River between Ipswich, Essex, and Gloucester, Mass. It was 40' long, with a 11' fluke width, 10' from tip of snout to eye, and a flipper length of 3.5'. The sex was undetermined because of the cutting damage caused when the U.S. Coast Guard tried to sink the carcass at sea. There is a photograph of the whale in the Boston Herald, Thur. Sept. 29, 1994, page 5.
