Bottlenose Dolphin Field School

OVERVIEW
The Bottlenose Dolphin Field School is based at a field station on
Virginia's Eastern Shore. During the field study period, teams of 15
to 25 staff and volunteers will carry out systematic observations of
the seasonally abundant dolphins. Most days will be spent conducting
coordinated observations of wild bottlenose dolphins and/or their haditat.
Evening activities will include lectures/seminars, data analysis and lively
discussions of the day's events. Students of the Field School will staff
observation posts, augment research boat crews, analyze photographs and
other data, work on special assignments and support operations of the
field station. This field experience will be enhanced by guest lecturers
and trips to areas of interest on the Eastern Shore.
 
BENEFITS
Bottlenose Dolphin Field School students will get hands-on experience
with the photographic identification method of scientific inquiry.
Participation in this field study is also intended to:
 
 o allow students to learn field methods of wildlife observation and
   data recording procedures;
 
 o introduce participants to techniques of wildlife behavioral analysis;
 
 o reinforce basic ecological concepts by examining interrelationships of
   the dolphins and their environment, and
 
 o offer an opportunity to become familiar with the life-styles and living
   conditions of a coastal marine mammal species.
 
HOUSING
Bottlenose Dolphin Field School students will reside in multiple-bedroom
houses on Virginia's Eastern Shore.
 
The houses will serve as dorms, meeting areas and research labs during
the five-week course. Although "rustic," these facilities are servicable
and comfortable and provide for adequate hygiene and recreation.
 
Preparation of meals will be the shared responsibility of all those
participating in the course.
 
COSTS
The field school fee is $600, of which a $100 deposit is due by April 15,
1995. Tuition (subject to changes required by the Board of Visitors)
for in-state students is $798 for the six-credit course; out-of-state
tuition is $1962.  The registration fee is $20 for all students.
 
THE FACULTY
Sherman C. Jones III, has a B.S. in Biology from Tarleton State College
in Texas, a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of North Carolina,
Wilmington, and an M.S. in Zoology from Texas A&M University. He has
been studying marine mammals since 1982. His thesis research involved
bottlenose dolphins at Galveston, Texas, and he has since done dolphin
research at Texas A&M/Galveston and at Del Mar College in Corpus Christi,
Texas. Additionally, he has worked extensively with marine mammal
strandings and as a specialist for the National Marine Fisheries
Service. He is currently an instructor with the Department of Biology,
Chemistry and Environmental Science at Christopher Newport University.
