On January 13, 1994 the Marine Mammal Stranding Center in Brigantine New
Jersey took in a yearling male Hooded Seal (Cystophora cristata). The
animal weight 102 lbs. and was suffering from respiratory distress and loss
of hair from 95% of it`s body. In addition the animal had a shark bite
on it`s hind flippers. The seal was released on May 12, 1994 at Lat: 39
30.38 and Long: 74 19.03 at a weight of 187 lbs. with a green tag #15.
The tag was returned February 3, 1995 with a note that stated the animal
had been found dead on August 24, 1994 in the St. Lawrence Estuary in the
region of Metis Sur Mer, Quebec province, Canada. A rough estimate
indicates that the animal traveled over 1600 miles in a period of 3 months.
