A volunteer position is available, working with the marine mammal group at
the Centro Interdisciplinario de Ciencias Marinas, in La Paz, Baja
California Sur, Mexico. This position entails a combination of field work
on local marine mammals, primarily blue and brydes whales and bottlenose
dolphins, and laboratory work (including dark room work, data analysis,
etc). Other species of cetaceans that we may be working with or could
expect to see in the area at that time include long-beaked common
dolphins, short-finned pilot whales, fin whales, humpback whales, sperm
whales, and dwarf sperm whales. Approximately 40% of the time would be
devoted to field work (2 days per week) and 60% to lab work (3 days per
week). The position is available immediately, and lasts until May 1995.
Room and board expenses will have to be covered by the individual, but
living in La Paz is fairly inexpensive (accomodation can be found for $150
U.S. per month or less).
Individuals should be able to speak some spanish. Experience with dark
room techniques, photography, IBM computers, and small boat handling are
