GREENPEACE ACTION ALERT

JAPAN KILLING WHALES IN NEW SANCTUARY - U.S. GOVERNMENT MUST
TAKE ACTION!

In May of 1994, at its 46th annual meeting, the International
Whaling Commission (IWC) voted overwhelming to enact the Southern
Ocean Whale Sanctuary protecting nearly twelve million square
miles of ocean for whales. Japan was the lone vote in opposition
of the Sanctuary. For the last 3 months, Japan has been hunting
minke whales for so-called scientific research in the sanctuary.

Commercial whaling was banned internationally in 1986. Countries
such as Norway and Japan have continued to kill whales by
exploiting a loophole in the moratorium that allows whales to be
killed for "scientific research". So-called scientific whaling
is merely a disguised act of commercial whaling. In Japan, whale
meat is considered a delicacy. It retails in Tokyo's markets for
up to $160 per pound, and regularly winds up on the menus of
expensive restaurants.

The whaling industry and its scientists have had the opportunity
to examine more than 2 million dead whales in this century alone.
Research is needed on population size and migration routes but
these research needs can be satisfied by studying live whales.

For the last two months, the MV GREENPEACE has been in the
Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary conducting non-lethal whale
research and documenting Japan's "scientific research" whaling.
Greenpeace activists have delayed the hunt for several days by
trailing the whaling fleet and documenting the fleet's whaling
activities. One of the three Japanese catcher vessels has left
the hunt on two occasions to follow the MV GREENPEACE in hopes of
discouraging our expedition. By surrendering one-third of their
killing capacity to follow us, the fleet is demonstrating again
they are more concerned in avoiding being seen and exposed than
they are in conducting serious scientific research.

During their voyage, the U.S. crew members of the MV GREENPEACE
wrote a letter to Vice President Gore urging the U.S. Government
to formally protest Japanese "scientific research" whaling in the
newly established sanctuary. Recently the United Kingdom and
France have joined New Zealand and Australia by issuing formal
protests to Japan over whaling in the sanctuary. Vice President
Gore has done nothing.

The MV GREENPEACE needs your help. Please write, call or fax
Vice President Gore and urge him to join the other countries in
protesting Japan's whaling!!
