To all west coast marine mammal observers:
 
   On Wednesday, May 3rd, at approximately 1900 hrs, a north Pacific right
whale was sighted approximately 1 mile off the beach at Pt. Piedras
Blancas, on the central California coast (approximate position N35:40,
W121:20). This represents only the 14th reliable right whale record from
California waters since the year 1900.  The whale was observed travelling
southbound. Aerial surveys flown along the central California coast the
next day failed to relocate the whale.  Any resightings, photographs, or
further information regarding this whale or any right whales sighted in
California waters would be most appreciated.  Information can be sent to
