Whale protection may hurt lobstermen
NEW YORK, May 5 (UPI S) -- New federal regulations designed to save
right whales from becoming entangled in lobster trap ropes has angered
fishermen. At a meeting in Portsmouth, Maine, opponents of the measure
to require lobstermen to use lines on their traps that would snap under
150 pounds of pressure actually outnumbered all the right whales in the
North Atlantic, which environmentalists tell the New York Times is all
the more reason to strengthen the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
