RIGHT WHALES: NMFS MAY SCALE BACK FISHING-GEAR REGS.
Rep. John Baldacci (D-ME) said National Marine Fisheries Service
officials may scale back proposed fishing and gear restrictions
intended to protect the endangered right whale.
Baldacci said officials realize their original proposals are too
expensive and would provide little benefit to the remaining 300 right
whales. Lobster fishers in northeastern states have protested the new
regs, which the NMFS estimates would cost $12,000 per boat to
implement (Greenwire, 5/5) (USA Today, 6/11).
