Hello everyone,
Quite a bit from this weekend...
First "Kiwi" checked in with two locations. This is the good news...The
strange news is that although she is well offshore she appears have headed
South and is now about 70-90 miles east of Chatham, Mass. (Remember this is
Dave's seal we are talking about). The good news is that this is in the
general vicinity of George's Bank, which would be as good a location as any
to find food. We have also gotten more dive data back from her and have
recorded her deepest dive (a little over 625 feet). She also appears to be
spending longer at deeper depths (over 100 meters). She is still doing the
occasional dive of over 25 minutes long. Her diving rate is a bit slower
than several days ago and she appears to be doing about 30-35 dives per six
hours. This is starting to resemble the pattern we saw with Stephanie. We
have our first STATUS message from the tag and it appears that part of the
reason we are receiving fewer messages is that she is sending fewer. This
may mean that the way she was swimming was not letting the tag get high
enough out of the water to send a clear signal or that sea state was making
it hard to get a signal off. It appears that we have been doing better for
the past few days so we will see.
As for the harbor seal. It appears that she is staying pretty much in the
same location . We are still getting good location and dive data back. One
of our concerns was that we might not be able to get reliable locations
while she was swimming, however over the weekend we received a location
class "3" message (this is the best accuracy you can get, good to roughly
150 meters) while she was swimming near South Harpswell. Her dive data also
shows more deep and long dives and if we continue to get good data we may be
able to see some patterns in the next week or so. Here are the locations so
