Hello all,
Another update before I disappear for the weekend. I am going to try to
keep to a once per week schedule for these updates, unless something really
neat or strange happens.
Here's the latest.... "Balti" has been doing some traveling. She has moved
further up the coast from near South Harpswell to an area between Pemaquid
and Port Clyde. She moved a bit north (nearly to Spruce Head) and appears
to have doubled back in the past two days. She appears to be staying fairly
near to the coast, and is in an area that is full of seals. It appears that
she moved past Boothbay fairly quickly on her way up the coast, which is not
surprising, considering how much activity is in that area at this time of
the year. Her diving behavior also appears to be changing with more dives
of longer duration...here are numbers comparing her first week to her total
duration picture...
7/15/97 duration <2min 2-5min 5-10min 10-15min 15-20min >20min
n=1132 total dives 777 315 25 3 5 7
% dives 68.64% 27.83% 2.21% 0.27% 0.44% 0.62%
7/22/97
n=2971 total dives 1349 1459 104 24 17 18
% dives 45.41% 49.11% 3.50% 0.81% 0.57% 0.61%
This looks pretty good with more 2-5 minute dives (maybe foraging) and about
the same percentage of longer dives.
Her haulout data still does not seem to have a pattern to it, but she has
spent nearly the whole night hauled out and generally hauls out nearly every
day for at least a short period.
As for "Kiwi"...our latest locations (two of them) have her east of Long
Island (almost straight south of Cape Cod). Her locations so far are listed
below. Her dive behavior still is not showing very deep dives, but some of
her dives are quite long. We also have some messages that look like she has
done some long periods of very shallow or surface swimming. So far this is
complicated by the few data points we have for her so it is hard to draw
much of a conclusion from what we have.
Well keep your fingers crossed that the tags hold up, the glue holds and
"Kiwi" starts to head north.
more later
