Most of these locations are still in the same general location as the past
week. It appears that "Casino" is staying in the same general area he
first hauled out, and not going more than 5 miles or so offshore. This has
kept him in a shallower depth range (30 meters or less),generally, although
even though we have not gotten locations from further offshore we have
gotten some depth measurements from dives that would put him from 5-10
miles offshore. He is, however returning to the same general area and
spending most of his time near the coast. The big question, is if he is
still doing OK, and right now that is difficult to say. Dive duration data
shows that he is still doing some long dives (some over 20 minutes), which
is probably a good sign. He does appear, however, to be spending less time
at deeper depth, with quite a bit of time spent at depths of less than 2
meters. While this may just be a change of behavior, now that he is
hauling out more, I have been assuming that he is finding food at deeper
depths, and if he is not spending enough time at those depths, he may, over
time, have a problem of not finding enough food. Since release, the data
we have been getting has shown that "Casino" has been spending about 50% of
his time at depths greater than 2 meters. Since 6/26 he has spent only
roughly 35% of his time at depths greater than 2 meters. This is still a
small sample of data so it may not be a true picture of his activity,
however, we will see if this trend keeps up. (Over a short period, if he
is less active he will need less food anyway).

FYI below is some data taken from the tag. This is compiled from
measurements taken by the tag that measures how much of the time the tag is
above the depth of 2 meters and how much it is below2 meters for each day .
Look at the pattern from 6/29 to 7/5....in this sample it appears that
"Casino" "rests up" on the 29th (spending little time diving, and quite a
bit out of the water), then spends more and more time at deep depths each
day, until he again hauls out on 7/5.
