More locations today. Things seem much improved, possibly because of
better satellite coverage as "PoeGo" moves North, maybe weather (the
rougher the seas the fewer transmissions we are likely to get), maybe
behavior (we will be checking dive behavior to see if he is spending more
time at the surface). The next few days should tell if he is going to move
into the Gulf of St. Lawrence or skip over toward Newfoundland. A quick
check shows that if he swam in a straight line near the coast (as he seems
to be now) around the southern tip of Nova Scotia, he traveled about 400
miles from the point where we stopped getting locations to where we picked
them up again (about 8.25 days later). His speed per day to do this would
be close to the average speed generally given for swimming seals. This
would mean he could not have been far offshore, and would have to have been
swimming along a fairly straight track (as he appears to be doing now) to
connect these two tracks.
Stay tuned,
ge
