Subject: origin of the name "sperm whale"

At work today, we were having a discussion regarding the orgin of the 
name "Sperm whale".  Besides the obvious option that first comes to 
mind, we could not come up with an intelligent guess.  I found where 
from the "case" of the whale, a waxy substance called Spermaceti is 
located, but I'm assuming that name is a derivation from the name of the 
whale.  Could you shed any light on this one.
