As we head out to sea, the harbor and shoreline behind us seems to become smaller and smaller. In front of us we see nothing but water. It is so cloudy today the water looks gray.
The light breeze from the northwest makes small ripples at
the surface. The speed of the boat makes it windy so we are glad we brought
jackets. The air temperature out here over the ocean has dropped to 17'C (61'F). Whales do not usually come close to shore and we know we may have
to travel for an hour or more before a whale may be seen.
The captain invites us to climb up the narrow stairs into his
wheelhouse. We are surprised to learn that there is no equipment to
help us find whales! We have to use our eyes only, just like the old whalers.
