Letter Writing

The following is a sample draft of a letter to a local legislator. It is only a sample, but if you follow the tips that are included, you will have a quality letter. It is important for the people who make the laws to know what the public wants and this is a way of letting them know.

The Honorable --------------
U.S. Senate
Washington, D.C. 20510

Dear Senator ----------,

Here is where you would write about the issue(s) that concerns you. It is important to keep the letter to the point. Try to write just the facts and get your point across. This could take two or three paragraphs.

Sincerely,

SUGGESTIONS

  • Make your letter personal. It is not necessary to type it as long as it is neat. Try to tell the legislator YOUR experiences and opinions. Be sure to include your return address on your letter.

  • When you send your letter is important. If there is a vote coming up that you think could help you and the river you want to protect, send your letter then. This is the time when it is most likely to influence a legislator's opinion.

  • It is a good idea to ask for a specific response. This may mean that you want a certain vote or maybe you want to know how a legislator stands on an issue.

  • Try to be positive in your letter. Thank the legislator for any positive steps that may have been or will be taken on the topic.

  • It is important to address your letter corectly. Here are some addresses that you may need:
