The Mississippi River Basin

FRESH WATER ECOSYSTEMS SUCH AS THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN OUR NATION'S CULTURAL, ECONOMIC, AND ENVIRONMENTAL LIFE. HOWEVER, MANY OF THESE WATER SYSTEMS ARE NOW IN DANGER. CHANGES IN THE DISTRIBUTION, ABUNDANCE, AND QUALITY OF OUR WATER RESOURCES IN RECENT YEARS REPRESENT A THREAT TO THE WAY THAT WE LIVE OUR LIVES AS WELL AS THE SURVIVAL OF MANY DIFFERENT ECOSYSTEMS THAT DEPEND ON THE WATER.

The Mississippi River Basin is made up of many rivers and small streams all of which combine at some point and empty into the Gulf of Mexico. The three major rivers in this watershed are:

The Mississippi River

The Missouri River

The Ohio River
