The second detriment to the Northern Right Whale, entrapment and entanglement in

fishing gear, impacts the whales in a cruel and devastating manner. The whales can become

entrapped in gillnets and lines from lobster pots, seines, and fishing weirs. An example of a

Northern Right Whale becoming tangled is the story of Stars, a whale whose baleen was tangled

in rope. However, she managed to lose the rope that had been stuck around her baleen for three

years, and then gave birth to a calf a year later.^{5 7}
