Satellite Tagging Observation Reports
2/2/05 - The tag on "Stephanie" the gray seal started up this morning and here is the first set of data. Just to get off on the right foot let me start with a correction. Contrary to what I said in my email (that the points did not appear to be moving and she was probably hauled out), she appears to be moving slowly offshore. The map shows the first and last point so far. In about 10 hours she has covered only about 3-4 miles (so if it is a race, it is a pretty slow one). It has been said that newly weaned gray seals are sometimes too fat to dive and pretty much drift around like buoys. Based on the number of hits we are getting for each location (as many as 12 in a pass!), it certainly does not appear that she is doing much diving yet.
