EWS Update #7 01/21/97 - 01/28/97 We've had another busy eight days here in the heart of the calving grounds. Our sightings have totaled eleven, with all but one of those being mother and calf pairs. One of these mother and calf pairs had another juvenile sized right whale accompanying them. On 01/28/97, we had four mother and calf pairs spread throughout the survey area from off of Mayport to north of Brunswick. On this same date, we know that FL-DEP had two mother and calf pairs south of our survey area, one of them was about forty-five miles south of Cape Canaveral. This is a spread of about eighty-five miles between our most northern and most southern sightings of moms and calves on this date. The number of moms in the area now stands at nine. We also have eighteen other whales verified, through photo analysis, in the area. We do have a number of photos still out that await analysis, and may enlighten us to the presence of a few more moms, we certainly hope so.
