CONCENTRATIONS OF ENDANGERED NORTHERN RIGHT WHALES ARE KNOWN TO BE PRESENT IN CAPE COD BAY. SIGHTINGS HAVE BEEN MADE IN THE AREA BOUNDED BY THE FOLLOWING COORDINATES.

Mariners are urged to maintain a sharp lookout and use caution around right whales. Intentional close approach is prohibited and may result in violation of federal or state law.

2/28/00 - The Coast Guard reported sighting a single right whale in the inbound (north) Boston Traffic Lane on Stellwagen Bank.

2/24/00 - The MA/CCS aerial survey team completed all track lines and the CCS R/V Shearwaterwas conducting right whale habitat studies in the Bay. The two platforms sighted 15 right whales. The MA Environmental Police reported sighting 2 right whales in the Bay. TOTAL RWs for day: 17

2/22/00 - The MA/CCS aerial survey team completed all track lines in Cape Cod Bay and reported 46 right whale sightings (3 were possible duplicate sightings). TOTAL RW's for day: 46

2/20/00 - The MA/CCS aerial survey team completed all track lines in Cape Cod Bay except the 2 norhernmost lines due to weather with 21 right whales sighted. The NOAA R/V Delaware II reported sighting 2 right whales in the Bay. TOTAL RWs for the day: 23

2/18/00 - The MA/CCS aerial survey team completed a few track lines in Cape Cod Bay before the weather picked up with 5 right whales sighted. The CCS R/V Shearwater was out conducting right whale habitat studies. The Massachusetts Environmental Police reported sighting 2 right whales in the Bay.

2/16/00 - The Coast Guard and Massachusetts Environmental Police reported sighting two right whales in Cape Cod Bay.

2/15/00 - The Coast Guard reported sighting a single right whale in the Nantucket Shoals area north of Ambrose Traffic Lane today.

2/13/00 - The MA/CCS aerial survey team completed all track lines in Cape Cod Bay. The CCS R/V Shearwater conducted right whale habitat studies in the Bay. A total of 20 right whales were observed there. The Coast Guard reported sightings of right whales in CCB amd 2 adults on Georges Bank. The CG/MA Environmental Police sighted 15 right whales just east of Jeffreys Ledge. TOTAL RWs for the day:37

2/10/00 - The MA/CCS conducted anaerial and ship survey in the Cape Cod Bay today. A total of 15 right whales were sighted near Provincetown, west of Wellfleet, and near the central portion of Cape Cod Bay.

2/9/00 - The Coast Guard reported sighting (1) right whale south of nantucket in the vicinity of Davis South Shaol.

2/8/00 - The MA/CCS aerial survey team completed all track lines in Cape Cod Bay. A total of 10 right whales were sighted in the area off Provincetown Harbor, the vicinity west of Wellfleet, and near the central portion of Cape Cod Bay.

2/3/00 - The MA/CCS aerial survey team completed all track lines in Cape Cod Bay, 10 right whales were sighted.

1/30/00 - The MA/CCS reported sighting 3 right whales after conducting an Aerial Survey in Cape Cod Bay today. The Whales were sighted in the Provincetoen Harbor area and southern Stellwagen Bank. The Coast Guard reported sighting 1 right whale in the vicinity of Provincetown Harbor.

1/27/00 - The Coast Guard and Massachusetts Environmental Police reported sighting 1 right whale in the vicinity of Jeremy Point near Wellfleet in Cape Cod Bay today. CCS/MA conducted an Aerial Survey in Cape Cod Bay and reported sighting 1 right whale in the vicinity of Wellfleet. All track lines were flown. Possible duplicate sighting.

1/27/00 - A Projected Drift Model has been issued by the Coast Giard for the dead right whale reported off Block Island on 1/20/00. Any mariners that resight this whale are asked to contact the Coast Guard and stand by if possible.

1/23/00 - The MA/CCS aerial survey team completed all track lines in Cape Cod Bay with 3 right whales sighted off Race Point.

1/20/00 _ A dead right whale sighted yesterday by a fisherman has been confirmed today to be a right whale. The last location of the floater is south of Block Island at 40 59.3N 071 35.1W. Weather conditions have prevented towing this whale to shore for further work up. Any mariners that re-sight this whale are asked to contact the Coast Guard and stand by, if possible. 1/20/00 - The MA/CCS survey team completed all trackline in Cape Cod Bay and 1 line flown about 2 miles off the beach from Chatham to Provincetown. One right whale was sighted in the Bay. Sea state conditions were very good. The CCS/RV Shearwater is also out conducting habitat studies for right whales.

1/7/00 - A fisherman reported sighting 7 right whales including a possible calf east of Nauset Beach area.

1/1/00 - The Coast Guard reported a single right whale off Ram Island on the northeast side of Portland.
NOTE: The location of this right whale proximal to shipping traffic entering/departing Portland Harboe and a right whale sighting at this time of year in this location necessitates dissemination to mariners despite the delayed distribution of the fax due to system problems.
