CONCENTRATIONS OF ENDANGERED NORTHERN RIGHT WHALES ARE KNOWN TO BE PRESENT IN CAPE COD BAY. SIGHTINGS HAVE BEEN MADE IN THE AREA BOUNDED BY THE FOLLOWING COORDINATES.

Mariners are urged to maintain a sharp lookout and use caution around right whales. Intentional close approach is prohibited and may result in violation of federal or state law.

3/31/00 - The MA/CCS plane flew a complete survey of Cape Cod Bay. The CCS R/V Shearwater conducted habitat survey in the Bay. The NMFS SAS plane surveyed the southern part of Stellwagen Bank and part of the Boston traffic Lanes. A total of 42 right whales were observed (soome duplicate sightings possible). The whales in the vacinity of the Traffic Lanes/north of the Cape generally were actively feeding below the surface.

3/29/00 - The Coast Guard reported sighting 13 right whales in the vicinity of Wood End, Race Point off Provincetown, and south of the Boston Traffic Lanes in the southern portion of Stellwagen Bank, North of Provincetown.

3/27/00 - The MA/CCS plane flew a partial survey of Cape Cod Bay. Two CCS R/Vs were conducting surveys in the Bay. The MA Environmental POlice & Coast Guard reported right whale sightings from the Bay. A total of 39 RWs were observd throughout the Bat and north of Provincetwon.

The NMFS SAS plane surveyed south of Long Island & in Block Island Sound with 1 right hwale sighted southwest of Nomans Island.

The MA/CCS ship R/V Shearwater reported sighting 24 right whales in the Bay while conducting ship maintenance runs. Whales were sighted off Provincetown Harbor, Corn Hill area of Truro and Wellfleet.

3/26/00 - The CCS R/V Shearwater reported sighting 6 right whales in Cape Cod Bay while conducting a maintenance run. Whales were sighted off Provincetown Harbor, Truto and Wellfleet. TOTAL RWs for day: 6

3/25/00 - The MA/CCS plane consucted an aerial survey completing all but 4 track lines in Cape Cod Bay. The CCS R/V Shearwater conducted habitat survey in the Bay. A total of 38 right whales were seen by the 2 platforms.

The NMFS SAS plane surveyed in the area of the Great South Channel. One right whale was sighted east of the Boston traffic Lane and North of the Great South Channel Critical Habitat Area. TOTAL RW's for day: 39

3/23/00 - The MA/CCS plane flew a partial survey of Cape Cod Bay due to fog. The CCS R/V Shearwater conducted habitat survey in the Bay. A total of 43 right whales were seen by the two platforms.

The NMFS SAS plane surveyed along the south side of Long Island and in Block Island Sound. Two right whale were seen in the Precautionary Area of the Naee/Buzzards Bay Traffic Lanes. TOTAL RW's for day: 45

3/14/00 - The MA/CCS plane flew a partial survey of Cape Cod Bay. The CCS R/V Shearwater did a partial habitat studies in the Bay. Both surveys were aborted due to increasing winds. 17 right whales were observed in Cape Cod Bay off Sandwich and Provincetown areas. The Coast Guard reported sighting three right whales south of Nantucket just north of the NY Traffic Lanes. TOTAL RWs for day: 20

3/11/00 - The MA/CCS plane consucted an aerial survey completing all track lines in the northern portion of Cape Cod Bay. A total of 18 right whales were sighted in the central section of Cape Cod Bay, off Provincetown Harboe, west of Wellfleet, and in the western section of the bay off the Plymouth/Kingston area.

3/8/00 - The MA/CCS plane completed all track lines in Cape Cod Bay and observed 31 right whales. The entangled right whale was not resighted.

3/7/00 - The MA/CCS plane completed all track lines in Cape Cod Bay. The CCS R/V Shearwater conducted habitat studies in the Bay and was prepared for a disentanglement attempt. The entangled right whale was not resighted. Total RWs for day: 31

3/6/00 - The Coast Guard reported sighting 2 right whales in the Billingsgate Shaol area today.

NOTE: Opportunistic sightings do not represent comprehensive surveys. Thus, mariners should assume that right whales remain distributed throughout Cape Cod Bay as shown in the March 5 and prior right whale alerts.

3/5/00 - The MA/CCS plane surveyed Cape Cod Bay and the CCS R/V Shearwater conducted habitat studies in the Bay. The CCS R/V was prepared for disentanglement attempts; however, the entangled right whale was not resighted. The Coast Gurad and MA Environmental Police also reported right whale sightings. TOTAL RWs for day: 26

3/2/00 - The MA/CCS plane partially surveyed Cape Cod Bay today (3 track lines were not completed) and searched for the entangled right whale. The CCS disentanglement team was standing by, but the entangled whale was not resighted. The plane sighted 33 right whales. Earlier in the day, The MA Environmental Police reported sighting 2 right whales (also seen by the plane). TOTAL RWs for day: 33

The Massachusetts Environmental Police reported sighting two right whales off the east entrance of the Cape Cod Canal. It is not known at this time if either whale is the entangled whale. The MS/CCS plane is expected to fly this morning to search for the entangled whale.

3/1/00 - The MA/CCS plane sighted an entangled right whale early on during their survey of Cape Cod Bay today. The plane supported the disentanglement efforts for a period and thus, they were unable to comlete all tracklines in the Bay. The CCS R/V Shearwater was conducting habitat studies in the Bay and immediately diverted to attempt disentanglement of the right whale. Workig up until dark, they were unable to disentangle or tag the gear on the whale. TOTAL RW's for Day (inc. ent RW): 37

NOTE: The plane also observed a tug and tow in the Bay that had one right whale ahead of it and one on each side of the tug within 1/2 mile. The tug failed to respond to all contact attempts made via the VHF radio. (CCS Reports on entangled Right Whales)
