Right Whale Sighting Advisory System (SAS)


CONCENTRATIONS OF ENDANGERED NORTHERN RIGHT WHALES ARE KNOWN TO BE PRESENT IN CAPE COD BAY. SIGHTINGS HAVE BEEN MADE IN THE AREA BOUNDED BY THE FOLLOWING COORDINATES.

Mariners are urged to maintain a sharp lookout and use caution around right whales. Intentional close approach is prohibited and may result in violation of federal or state law.

Reports:

4/29/00 - A whale watch vessel reported sighting a single right whale between Stellwagen Bank and Wildcat Knoll in the Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary.

4/28/00 - The NMFS SAS plane flew shortened track lines in the Great South Channel sliver area (west side of the GSC)with variable, but steadily increasing sea state conditions. The entangled humpback whale of 25 April was re-sighted along with 4 right whales. No disentanglement attempt was made.

The MA/CCS plane surveyed Cape Cod Bay completely with no right whales sighted. TOTAL RWs for day:4

4/27/00 - The NMFS SAS plane surveyed shortened track lines over the Great South Channel sliver area (west side of the GSC right whale critical habitat) with 13 right whales sighted. The whales were observed in the Boston Traffic Lanes and to the east of the lanes.

The MA/CCS plane completed a survey of Cape Cod Bay with no right whales sighted.

4/25/00 - The NMFS SAS plane completed approximately 1.5 tracklines in the Great South Channel before the weather deteriorated. They sighted 2 right whales in the Boston Traffic Lanes and 1 entangled humpback whale. Weather conditions precluded any disentanglement attempt.

The MA/CCS plane and the CCS R/V surveyed in Cape Cod Bay with no right whales sighted.The NMFS NEC plane partially surveyed Jeffreys Ledge & Platts Bank with no right whales. TOTAL RWs for day:2

4/15/00 - A whale watch vessel reported sighting one right whale skim feeding off of Provincetown.

4/14/00 - The NMFS SAS plane reported sighting 6 right whales after completeing an aerial survey of the Great South Channel. The CCS R/V Shearwater conducted a habitat survey and an aerial survey in Cape Cod Bay with no right whale sightings. TOTAL RWs for day: 6

4/12/00 - The Coast Guard reported sighting 2 right whales in the Great South Channel east of Chatham.

4/11/00 - The MA/CCS plane completed an aerial survey (tracks 1-14,16) in Cape Cod Bay.The CCS R/V Shearwater conducted a habitat survey in the Bay. A total of 3 right whales and an entangled juvenile humpback whale were sighted in the Bay. Disentanglement efforts were initiated.

The NMFS SAS plane surveyed Platts Bank via Stellwagen Bank and Jeffreys Ledge. One right whale was sighted in the Boston Traffic Lanes on the southern part of Stellwagen Bank. TOTAL RWs for day:4

4/7/00- The MA/CCS plane surveyed of Cape Cod Bay; the CCS R/V Shearwater conducted habitat survey in the Bay; the MA Environmental Police & coast Gurad had oppportunistic sightings in the Bay. A total of 33 right whales were sighted in the Bay.

The NMFS SAS plane surveyed Block Island Sound and the Great South Channel with three right whales sighted in the Boston Traffic Lanes. TOTAL RWs for day: 36

4/3/00 - Center for Coastal Studies (CCS) staff sighted skim feeding right whales from the shore today. Based on these sightings, the CCS R/V Shearwater sailed to do a habitat survey this afternoon. A total of 4 right whales were observed skim, or surface, feeding in the general area where right whales were observed last Friday feeding below the surface.

4/2/00 - The Coast Guard reported sighting 3 right whales in the precautionary area of the Boston/Mew York Traffic Lanes in Great South Channel. TOTAL RWs for day: 3

4/1/00 - The MA/CCS plane surveyed of Cape Cod Bay; the CCS R/V Shearwater conducted habitat survey in the Bay; the MA Environmental Police reported right whale sightings in the Bay. A total of 38 right whales were sighted in the Bay and north of Provincetown. The NMFS SAS plane completed 6 tracklines in the Great South Channel with 4 right whales sighted. TOTAL RWs for day: 42
