5/31/00 - The Coast Guard reported sighting right whales at two locations in the
Great South Channel. A total of 5 right whales were sighted.
5/28/00 - The NMFS SAS plane is surveying in the southern part of the Great South
Channel with 4 right whales sighted thus far. The Int'l Fund for Animal
Welfare is conducting a ship survey in the Great South Channel with 4
right whales sighted. Both platforms are continuing to survey; thus,
this report may be updated later today.
5/27/00 - The NMFS SAS plane surveyed the Great South Channel with 15 right whales observed. The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) was conducting a right whale survey from their research vessel and sighted 1 right whale. TOTAL RWs for day: 16
5/26/00 - The NMFS SAS plane surveyed in the Great South Channel (GSC) and the NMFS NEC plane surveyed across the GSC and along the northern edge of Georges Bank. A total of 33 right whales were observed.
5/17/00 - The NMFS NEC and CCS/MA planes surveyed the northern edge of Georges Bank and east of the Exclusive Economic Zone marine boundary with a totoal of 17 right whales observed.
5/16/00 - The NMFS NEC plane surveyed the northern edge of Georges Bank and across the Great South Channel with 24 right whales sighted (some possible duplicates).The NMFS SAS plane surveyed the northern part of the GSC with no right whales sighted. TOTAL RWs for day:24
The NMFS SAS plane is presently out searching for a possible ship struck whale reported late this afternoon in the vicinity of Block Canyon.
5/15/00 - The NMFS NEC plane surveyed the Cultivator Shoal and northern edge of Georges Bank with 15 right whales sighted.
5/12/00 - The MA/CCS plane surveyed the north central section of the Great South Channel and an area near the BC buoy with 1 right whale sighted.The NMFS SAS plane surveyed in the southern section of the Great South Channel with no right whales sighted. TOTAL RWs for day:1
5/8/00 - The NMFS SAS initiated surveying in the GSC w/3 right whales observed.The NMFS NEC plane surveyed north of the GSC and sighted 1 entangled rght whale in Wilkinson Basin. NMFS NEC subsequently had mechanical problems and returned home. NMFS SAS plane diverted and re-sighted the entangled whale. The CCS/MA plane surveyed in CC Bay w/no right whales sighted. The CCS R/V Shearwater surveyed on Stellwagen & diverted to get a satellite tag on the entangled whale. TOTAL RWs for day:4
5/6/00 - The NMFS SAS plane conducted a survey in the Great South Channel(GSC) today. One right whale was reported sighted in the North Central portion of GSC.
An entangled humpback whale was sighted, possibly the same one reported
sighted two other times. No dis- entanglement procedures could be
initiated at this time.

5/3/00 - Three planes (MA/CCS, NMFS SAS, NMFS NEC) conducted a comprehensive survey of the Great South Channel today. The CCS R/V Shearwater conducted a habitat survey in Cape Cod Bay today with no right whales sighted.
A total of 38 right whales were observed in the Great South Channel.
