CONCENTRATIONS OF ENDANGERED NORTHERN RIGHT WHALES ARE KNOWN TO BE PRESENT IN CAPE COD BAY. SIGHTINGS HAVE BEEN MADE IN THE AREA BOUNDED BY THE FOLLOWING COORDINATES.

Mariners are urged to maintain a sharp lookout and use caution around right whales. Intentional close approach is prohibited and may result in violation of federal or state law.

7/31/00 - The Coast Guard reported sighting a single right whale east of Jeffreys Ledge and proximal to the Portland Traffic Lanes.

7/17/00 - The high speed ferry out of Bar Harbor, ME reported sighting a single right whale off the Lurcher Shoal area off Yarmouth, Nova Scotia.

This is an UPDATED report for 17 July 2000. The Coast Guard reported sighting a single right whale east of Veatch Canyon along the edge of the continental shelf. Previously, the high speed ferry out of Bar Harbor, ME had reported a single right whale off Yarmouth, Nova Scotia in the vicinity of Lurcher Shoal.

7/14/00 - A whale watch vessel reported sighting a single right whale in the central portion of Stellwagen Bank National Marine Sanctuary.

7/6/00 - The high speed ferry out of Bar Harbor, ME reported sighting 2 right whales in the vicinity of Lurcher Shoal off Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. One whale was breaching when sighted.

This is an updated report for 6 July. The NMFS NEC plane surveyed the Cashes & Fippennies Ledges area with 1 right whale sighted.The opportunistic sighting of 2 right whales on Lurcher Shoal off Yarmouth,NS from the high speed ferry out of Bar Harbor, ME is included in this update. TOTAL RWs for day: 3 right whales
