1/20/00 _ A dead right whale sighted yesterday by a fisherman has been confirmed today to be a right whale. The last location of the floater is south of Block Island at 40 59.3N 071 35.1W. Weather conditions have prevented towing this whale to shore for further work up. Any mariners that re-sight this whale are asked to contact the Coast Guard and stand by, if possible. 1/20/00 - The MA/CCS survey team completed all trackline in Cape Cod Bay and 1 line flown about 2 miles off the beach from Chatham to Provincetown. One right whale was sighted in the Bay. Sea state conditions were very good. The CCS/RV Shearwater is also out conducting habitat studies for right whales.
1/7/00 - A fisherman reported sighting 7 right whales including a possible calf east of Nauset Beach area.
1/1/00 - The Coast Guard reported a single right whale off Ram Island on the northeast side of Portland.
11/20/99 - Two adult right whales were sighted in Long Island Sound off the Plum Island/Orient Point area today.
10/30/99 - A whale watch vessel out of Maine reported the sighting of two right whales near Jeffrey's Ledge.
10/24/99 - A Boston whale watch vessel reported sighting 2 right whales just west of Stellwagen Bank in the vicinity of the inbound Boston Traffic Lane.
9/15/99 - An entangled right whale that has a satellite tag from disentanglement attempts earlier this week has been reported. This right whale was initially sighted with gear on 10 May 1999 in the Great South Channel. It was re-sighted for the first time in the Bay of Fundy Labor Day weekend.Despite recent efforts, only some of the gear has been removed. The animal is in a debilitated condition; mariners are asked to take every caution to avoid.
9/17/99 - The same entangled right whale from 9/15/99 with the satellite tag has been reported in the vicinity of cashes ledge. As before, the animal is in a debilitated conditions and mariners should exercise caution to aviod.
9/20/99 - The previously reported right whale (#2030) has moved down through the Great South Channel and is south of the Traffic Lanes Precautionary Area at Hydrographer Canyon. A satellite tag was placed yesterday (9/19/99) on the trailing gear of a second entangled right whale (#2660) in the Bay of Fundy near grand Manan Island. (CCS Reports on entangled right whales)
9/21/99 - Entangled right whale (#2030) is still located in the vicinity of Hydrographer Canyon but has moved 14 nm to the west since last reported. (SSE of Nantucket and south of the Traffic Lanes Precautionary Area). The second entangled right whale (#2660) is still located in the Bay of Fundy SE of Grand Manan Island.
9/22/99 - Entangled right whale (#2030) has moved in a westerly direction since last reported and is located south of Martha's Vinyard below the New York Traffic Lanes. The second entangled right whale (#2660) moved in a westerly direction SSE of Grand Manan Island in the Bay of Fundy, and was last seen just southeast of Gannet Rock.
9/23/99 - Entangled right whale (#2030) off southern New England has continued to move in a westerly direction and is reported south of the New York Traffic Lanes. Last reported position for the whale was south of Montauk, New York/north of Block Canyon. The tag on the second entangled right whale (#2660) is believed to have falln off the gear.
9/24/99 - Entangled right whale (#2030) has been reported east of Barnegat, New Jersey in the vicinity of the New York Traffic Lanes (Hudson to Ambrose). It has continued to move in a westerly direction near the 50 fathom contour.
